No kidding. So much for the "everyone already owns all The Beatles songs they want" mantra. ;)

    +1

It was like saying everyone who wants an iPod already has one.

I have my Macbook since July and have never experienced a random shutdown.

My Lenovo laptop has no known hardware defect and thanks to wonderful software from Microsoft I do experience random shutdowns, lockups, bluescreens, you name it.

Given the choice between a Windows box guaranteed to crash, get infected and worm its way around the network, I'd much rather get a Macbook with a pretty stable OS and generally wonderful machine.

Feel good about yourself right? That's her choice to drive her family in, not yours. I can't stand smug people. I have no need for gas guzzler to haul kids and material around, but if I did I have the personal liberty to make that purchase. Kinda like apple products, the more choices and configurations that there are, the more ideal they become for the many different types of consumers.

Your point would be valid IF SHE HAD A FAMILY TO HAUL AROUND ANYMORE.

Both her children have their own vehicles and they no longer take long family vacations in the car anymore.

The wasting of a finite resource and pollution put out by a vehicle that large to drive 3 miles to and from the grocery store has no justification.

And yes, I do feel good about myself. I drive a vehicle that gets 95+ mpg.

Apple has released MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1 (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate11.html), which aims to improve the MacBook's internal monitoring system and address issues with unexpected shutdowns.

A number of MacBook owners have had their MacBooks intermittently randomly shut down on them, an issue which has come to be known as MacBook RSS (Random Shutdown Syndrome). In a recent summary of the issue, including a pending class-action lawsuit (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2132), AppleInsider quotes Ogrady's PowerPage that nails down the root cause of the issue to the following:

"Essentially the heatsink can expand during use, and comes into contact with the lead from the [thermometer's] sensor cable," reads a more detailed explanation posted at Ogrady's Power Page. "A short circuit results, and the SMC (System Management Controller) pulls the plug. Once the system cools down, the heatsink [recedes] and the contact is broken."

As is the case with all firmware upgrades, Apple cautions users to not interrupt the update. Detailed information regarding the update can be found here (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n304308).

IMHO the white leaves different marks that are just as back...after awhile ull get a bunch of scuff marks that make the finish look more greyish brown...this is why i hated iBooks

Ugh, this is going to give my PC-loving friends fuel for YEARS. Just like every little crap article that comes out about ANY possible Apple security problem.

If that's true, strongly consider getting some new friends. The previous huge Dell battery recall should be enough to shut them up, at the very least.

I guess I hit the "jackpot": both my 12" Powerbook and 12" iBook battery fall within the recall parameters. Will have to wait for Apple to fix their site so the serial numbers actually work. I uselessly spent about 25 minutes on the phone with AppleCare for no good result: they said try the web site later or call again tomorrow.

I will also have to go to all of my clients and check their batteries. A tedious enough task, but more billable hours for me, I guess.

Safe predictions for the MB C2D:

2.16 GHz for the upper two models, 2.0 for the cheapest
    ~20MB larger hard drive
    no difference in GPU
    runs significantly cooler overall

    Riskier bets:

1GB standard (but as two 512MB cards, unlike the MBP)
Price premium for black reduced to $100

I posted in another post on this website this claim some time ago. Wal-Mart uses loss-leading priced CD sales to draw people into the store. BTW that is directly harmful to other brick and morter stores as well as medium priced online retailers. Are they apologizing for that?

It seems that since Wal-Mart tends to service the very lowest income class in our culture and many of these folks tend to not have computers, and to the extent they do, tend to not have broadband either, it seems there is a degree of mutual exclusivity of markets.

Therefore it seems Wal-Mart is less concerned about the sales themselves as the "benefits" they receive by the physical customer traffic they get from some people going to Wal-Mart to buy intentionally underpriced product so they will shop for other things while there.

BTW Wal-Mart themselves state this, so it is not speculation.

    Rocketman

I was wondering how many hillbillies and other country folk have an iPod. maybe Walmart is afraid that even Billy bob wants to download instead of buying from crappy WM.

It is a different issue. That relates to repeating the tone after a couple of minutes if the user hasn't read the message. The "bug" we are referring to is that the SMS vibrate alert has gone from a continuous pulse to a "double-click" style. It is a positive for some, but for me it's a negative. Seems to be louder, and more obtrusive. Hard to describe.

    You're right. Post updated.

You guys are missing a huge point. A couple actually. There not going to take away the high storage and only leave people with a 64GB option, because people would buy the 120GB Zune. Have you ever though that they are going to release a huge 10 year anaversery or something? Also, so what? It's been 2 years since an upgrade. Why freak out? It's a classic, it doesn't need to do anything more. Also, the Zune HD and other Zunes haven't been updated in over 3 years,,, many products just don't need them right now.

i would fall of my chair laughing if apple did some notification that you shouldn't shut down your macbook during the firmware update... hhehehe :D

they did. check the article. pretty ironic.

but i just installed it on my blackbook without a hitch. mid-summer mine was shutting down, then after the 1.0 firmware update it worked fine, and it just started again this week. i've been using it for 30 mins since the 1.1 update with no shutdowns.

i wonder if it just ignores that temp sensor shorting out? there's bound to be other temp sensors in the case, they could just completely ignore that one.

You know exactly what every MBP purchaser does with their hardware do you?

I would notice the upgrade. A LOT.

I'm sure you would. Most wouldn't, unless we assume that everyone here runs processor and RAM intensive tasks all the time.

Nice, but not essential. I usually have the patience to wait until I'm home to install an update. Unless it's an iOS update..

More important to me is over-the-air syncing. That would be a killer!

I just assumed that the two would come hand in hand though I now see why that's not necessarily the case. I agree, OTA syncing is even better but there just isnt any reason to not be able to do both.

You can save a little money by buying the box set on CD from Amazon, but then your music is in that old-fashioned "hard-copy" format so you have to rip the music to iTunes! :)

Amazon also sells the mono collection, which I've been contemplating but haven't yet purchased.

Got it.Love it.And the stereo box,and the memory stick with the complete stereo box in MP3(or is it AAC..or both?)AND FLAC-the highest quality ever released.

yes all that I wanted in my imac. VRAM memory bumped to 256 would have been great but I appreciate more the price drop. I was going to buy a 20" (glad I havent yet) but know who knows.

Here in Honduras, the only authorized mac reseller in my city had the last 20" for US$2052 (in Honduras, computers are sales tax free), I wonder if they will apply the full $300 rebate. If they use the same margins the 24" should be around US$2250. Still not bad since I was going to pay US$2000 for it. The only problem with them is that they dont give you the option to customize your mac.

So if I go with either the 20" or the 24" I win both ways! Thanks Apple.

Now how long will I have to wait to they have them here? BTW They sold all of their 17 and 20 imacs nationwide and they said that they were waiting for a shipment of new models.:)

I will be a happy camper this christmas!

And you and people like you represent how much of the population?

I'm curious as to what exactly you're trying to say? There is plenty of "work" that can be, and is, done on a Mac.

The next time you're watching TV, listening to music, reading a magazine, etc etc etc, you had better remember that there are those of us who have to "work" to get those things to consumers like you, and out of that workforce, Mac users represent a sizeable chunk.

EDIT- or were you just being sarcastic when you said macs were for "play"?

Apple today introduced its 2G iPod Nano (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/), available in 5 colors depending on model. Apple claims the new model can get up to 24 hours of battery life, and the screen is 40% brighter. The new models are as follows, and are available today:

    2 GB: $149
    -Silver only

    4 GB: $199
    -Silver, Pink, Green, Blue

    8 GB: $249
    -Black only

Alongside the new Nano, billboard and TV (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/ads/) advertising campaigns for the products were announced.

According to the Wikipedia article, a Home Basic upgrade is only $99.95, which is cheaper than the standard $129 for OS X releases. Then again, education customers can often get Mac OS for around $70 in some cases, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if there will be education discounts for Vista or how much they will be. With so many versions and price points for Vista and an unknown price tag for Leopard, it's very complicated to make comparisons...

Now one of the big questions is, who can get a Home Basic upgrade and how much are Home Basic users missing out on if they get that as opposed to Aero, etc.? No one knows for sure all the details at this point and we won't know for sure until official announcements are made. Although I would take OS X over Windows any day, we have to be cautious I think before saying Mac's upgrades are cheaper than Windows'. It looks like in many cases they will be, but not necessarily in all cases.

Yeah, but Home Basic is crap.

Switched to macs back in 2001 and while I love the OS I have had a continuous stream of hardware problems with all apple products I have bought:

iBook G3: logic board died and replaced 3 times

iMac G5: CPU got so hot the machine almost melted! So far I have had the logic board replaced 3 times.

MacBook: Random shutdown syndrome, faulty mouse and track pad, palm rest discoloration. Currently in for repair again!

iPod: hard disk and battery both died

EDIT: and don't get me started about the abomination that is the so called mighty mouse. The thing barely lasted a week!

Apple have really got to get there quality control sorted out. So what if the OS is great if the continual hardware faults mean you can't actually use the damn thing!

    One cheesed off mac user.
Your experience is clearly not representative. My family and I have had 9 Macs, and no hardware problems ever. And large surveys, including those by PC Magazine and Consumer Reports, have shown that Apple desktops require significantly fewer repairs than any other brand out there.

Either you are trolling, or you are the most unlucky Mac user I have ever heard of...
