But backups and updates are critical for such a device. That is my whole point... Are you arguing that it does not need ota syncing or just arguing? Obviously its serviceable without tethering, but you do need to sync it to a computer for it to work. Thats like if I had to plug my scooter into my car just to get it going. It makes it a luxury and not a necessity. They would sell more by making it stand on its own. Even if it required a wifi connection to do updates and sync. They would sell even more than they already do.
umm i wasn't arguing with you  I was just stating that you don't really need a computer to use an iPad, especially if you don't already have one. You made it seem like if you buy an iPad you must have a computer, not necessarily true, apple will set it up for you at the store and it will work just fine from that point forward it doesn't suddenly stop working if you never back it up or update it.
I doubt apple would sell more iPads if it could update on it's own... i don't think there are any consumers out there who say oh, i can't update this device without a computer? Forget it, I don't want it...
backups and updates are critical for YOU... not the majority of consumers. There are plenty of people who never update anything that they own, they don't understand what it means. I know people who don't even update the apps they have downloaded when their app store has a nice badge with 39 updates and they still don't know what to do with that.
People on these boards don't understand how dumb the average consumer is. People always say well apple should have done this, I can't believe they don't allow users to do this, etc. etc. If you realize that you may want these features because you are technologically inclined, but the majority of "normal" users would just be confused by it you would understand more why they make the decisions that they do.
Most people don't know how to install or uninstall programs, manage a file system, what the difference between HD and SD is, 720p vs 1080p, hell i know people who don't even know what bluray is. Your average family usually has more to worry about than if they have the latest technology.
So can someone explain to me why they have to get Verizon's permission to offer system upgrades over the air, when you can already go in the app store and download Angry Birds over the air? Seriously, this would be a security boon to be able to push updates without tethering them to a computer. Many people don't sync their iPhones for weeks at a time, but they are on them daily. If you can push out security updates sooner, then it is a good thing for everyone involved. And I would wager there's waaaaay more bandwidth being sucked up by iTunes and the App Store than system updates would require.
not necessarily true.. your phone won't allow you to download apps over 20mb, considering iOS updates are 600mb+ there is a major difference.
OTA updates wouldn't really mean apple could push them out faster, if anything, based on other evidence it usually occurs slower. OTA updates for android are pushed out in "waves" so that they don't kill the network. When an iOS update is released anyone anywhere can download it.

Yes, I know that some places (e.g. Texas), black people are provided with retarded attourneys who show up intoxicated in court - if showing up at all.
This is the first I've ever heard of this. Do you have a source? Usually the situation is that public defenders have too many cases.
You do realize there are plenty of other minorities who are not black right? They don't seem to be having the same problem. By your logic Asians, Indians, and even Jews should be having the same problems. But they're not. I have no bias in my OP, just cold hard facts. You choose to continue to sugarcoat the issue and be politically correct, but you're wrong.
The influx of Russians into parts of the U.S. is bringing more crime.

As happy and excited I am about this update, I can't stop feeling a little irritated about the amount of time it has taken for it to come out.
It is 3 years since I first almost bankrupted myself by buying an octo-core machine. And I bought it based on all the rhetoric Apple spewed. Since then the only thing I seem to own that actually utilizes all that power is bleedin' Handbrake, an open source application.
Don't get me wrong, watching Handbrake crunch HD video at 120 FPS is a thing of wonder, but using FCP and having 7 of 8 cores sat there idly doing nothing has profoundly bothered me.
I guess it is my own fault for being such an early adopter and being so utterly addicted to Apple's marketing hype.
PS., Please god, don't let this new Final Cut be anything like the first iteration of Aperture 3. One of my worst software nightmares ever.

Here's the deal: Now that cell phone sensors are approaching a decent quality, they will need good optics or it doesn't matter. That's where, I believe, Sony comes in. If you just throw in "MOAR MEGAPIXELS" then you've already lost. Looks great on a stats sheet for Android noobs, looks bad as a print (or at the least not any better than a lower mp sensor).
Stats don't matter. That's what all the PC people say about Thunderbolt. Unless they got it first. Then any notebook without it would be considered worthless. Like a Mac and what they would then call its "legacy I/O." Lol...
My first dSLR was a Canon Rebel XT. It had an 8mp sensor. Crazy to think my phone will have one too, despite the noise, inferior optics and lack of control. But still, crazy! And probably 1080p video too.
All I can say is this iPhone 5 better come in 64GB and 128GB sizes! I'm already out of room on my 32GB model. I hope there is a setting for video quality. 720p is fine for casual videos. If I actually need 1080p (for legit work), I'll use my 7D + L optics, thank you very much! Haha. But it's inevitable.

Get a grip.
Get a grip? I don't care if you are a Demi-god that is pretty freakin rude. Considering the Apple owns much of the flash market and the competition already sells higher capacities at lower prices I would say they are making plenty of profit. Not offering student discounts like they have in the past is just pure greed. College students provide plenty of free marketing for them and help increase their cool factor and college students are poor. They should get a break.

firewire 800 also. nice :)
Why 1394b at 800 Mbps when eSATA at 3000 Mbps is available?
Apple missed the boat on the external storage front here.... It had a chance to be a leader, but instead is still pushing 1394.

Any 3D technology that relies on both eyes being perfectly stereo aligned is not a good technology. Anyone with a slightly lazy eye will get dizzy and experience headaches, for people like me who can see only slightly with one eye it becomes a huge problem triggering migraines. Also, any children under 18 (I think it's 18) should not be looking at 3D as they can become adversely affected later in life due to the unnatural perspective vs viewing distance.
I also think 3D would just die, but we have marketeers that just won't leave the subject alone.
If Apple does do 3D, I think it will be the head tracking kind, which should effectively be called "motion aware" or "perspective aware" instead of 3D.

Apple has $15 Billion in Cash...and as a shareholder, (i'm not alone here) am a little upset that they're not doing anything with it. A billion or two won't kill them.
Remember that the iphone is the most profitable product line that apple has. I think that they will continue this trend into the other products, however in order to do so, you must build the infrastructure. Apple will either buy out a current player in the wireless sector, or will slowly deploy their own network, slowly integrating existing products into it... convergence.
That would be incredible.
iPhone + not AT&T = Yay for all!
And that's just the beginning.

I bet they'll ship these before they ship us our 17" C2D MBPs that they waited until the last minute to tell us could not ship due to "high demand" even though they haven't shipped any.
What a horrible company.
Don't feel bad. I received my MBP15 on 10-31 and it had a bad left speaker. I had to send it back for repair/replacement (whichever they do is fine with me). I got mine and had to let it go. :(

Toys R Us? Seriously? What a bizzarre place to buy a tablet PC. I guess we'll be seeing them with the Fisher Price laptops.
I guess you're too young to remember Children's Palace or the Sears Christmas catalog :) Used to be that's where you'd go to browse, play with, and buy your Atari 400 or Vic-20.
Back to the present: hold on to your hat, this is going to blow you away, but Toys R Us already sells...the iPod Touch!!!!

I don't know why you would expect them to not also sell its big brother, the hottest toy / gadget to be found? It's for kids, you know?

ok that seems nice, but..
where's the bluetooth syncing?
it's four years people were asking for bluetooth syncing...
what's the problem with it? i don't want to unplug the cable from behind the bed, plug it to the computer just to upload my calendar, music, contacts.
..oh, ok, i've got it. maybe they just want me to subscribe to mobileMe.
i'm sick of castrated technology, i'd like to use them at their full possibilities.

I think I'll enjoy my iPhone 4 a while longer and my battery life. LTE is not prevalent enough yet, nor are the chipsets able to run low power enough. Mid 2012 is the best timeframe for LTE. Any earlier and you are on the bleeding edge of no infrastructure. The networks and the technology simply aren't ready.
Oh, and the biggest myth about LTE: People actually believe there will be a significant bandwidth improvement. Sorry, but the jump from EDGE to 3G was much more significant than 3G to LTE, especially with 3G running at 7.2.

If you look at the picture of the iPhone poster, it seems to have a couple of subtle differences compared to my iPhone:
I think you're right about the home buttons on the iPhone. Here's a picture of one from the apple website, and the one from the macworld poster.

I am a professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just don't edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.
I was in a discussion a year ago about all the new features that just got released. In the days of yesteryear, editors (film wise) would cut the film, then once they had a locked picture, they would add audio, color the film, sound effects and score. Those days are long gone.
A year ago during a project, I found myself very angry at the way FCP was functioning given the way editors have to edit today. I have been a big FCP user for years and consider myself very experienced with the software. I refer to the editing style of today (which is also being done in feature film editorial) that you are no longer just the film/video editor. YOU ARE the sound designer, the colorist, the composer, and the technician, at least a basic level.
I feel that 10 years ago you would show a "rough" cut that was 50% done, no audio effects, color, or score, just the cuts and clients were able to get it. However, today I feel that a rough cut needs to look more like 95% done. Many times when I show a client a piece of footage that doesnt look like an almost finished product, they get concerned about the final piece, even when you explain that it is a rough cut.
So now that a lot of editors are having to show cuts that are almost done to get notes, the actual act of editing has become a nightmare to me. I have show basically a finished cut (sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics) and then when there is a change, I have to move all of the sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics out of the way to make the simplest edit. Half the time, something gets moved that isnt supposed to causing extra work. And I will be honest, sometimes, (which I know we all do....) I say "good enough," because the actual act of moving a giant timeline around is just too painful.
Well not anymore! (hopefully)
I want the freedom that FCPX will hopefully provide.
And of course one final thought. A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are a good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isn't necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easily and more efficiently. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.

I thought he was gonna share a specific experience or incident that got him fed up
Instead he's just vehemently opposed to the model, which means he should have never started coding in the first place. When you code a release up to 3.0 and then quit on basic principle, that's retarded
It probably has to do with the three20 project incident a couple of days ago. Basically some devs had their apps rejected because they were using three20 which had some private API calls.
